Practically all authorities are agreed that this portraitdoes not represent Drummond. It may possibly be alikeness of John Drummond, second Earl of Perth, judgingby the portraits of the latter that are extant. It was recently acquired by the authorities ofthe National Portrait Gallery of Edinburgh at a sale ofMr. Muirheads effects. It represents a man with hairbrushed back high, a thin beard, and a generally mourn-ful appearance. If the inscription Mia,: 23. 1600be authentic, this portrait cannot possibly representDrummond, who in that year was only fifteen years ofage. However that may be, it appears to bear no relation-ship to any of the portraits that possess any pretence toauthenticity. III.
