Surface plasmon polaritons. Illustration of electron density waves called surface plasmon polaritons being created on a surface with microcavities. Plasmonics is a technique involving the manipulation of plasmons (quanta of electron density oscillations) in order to combine the advantages of optical and electronic data transfer. The plasmons are achieved by directing light waves at the interface between a metal and a dielectric. The waves of free electrons produced at the interface are often at optical frequencies, and so would mean optical signals (encoding a lot of information) can be transmitted through minuscule nanoscale structures. The microcavities amplify waves that enter the plasmonic cavity.
