Tree nuts, such as walnuts, cashews or Brazil nuts are nutrient rich foods that between them provide a source of protein, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, thiamin, and vitamin E. However, they can cause an adverse reaction to an otherwise harmless food or food component. In the case of an allergy, the immune system reacts abnormally to the protein in that food and can rapidly trigger typical allergy symptoms. A food intolerance to tree nuts on the other hand, does not involve the immune system and is not life-threatening, with symptoms that come on more slowly.
