Gani warriors near Lake Victoria. 19th-century illustration of warriors from the Gani people. The region of Gani was one of several explored by James Augustus Grant and John Hanning Speke on their expeditions to discover the source of the River Nile. This expedition took place from 1860 to 1861. They travelled inland from Zanzibar on the coast, passing up the western side of Lake Victoria. Artwork published in 1864.
