ANOMALIES IN MILK SECRETION. 647 The mammary secretion, at first sufficient, may at times bemuch diminished as the result of hemorrhages or of diarrhea, inconsequence of an acute febrile attack during lactation, or ofinflammation within the gland itself. Serious organic diseasesmay also be a cause, and insufficient nourishment must be heldaccountable in some cases. During the siege of Paris an obser-vation of forty-three nursing women by Decaisne proved thatwith imperfect nutrition the total quantity of the milk is muchdecreased.
