WATT DISCOVERING THE POWER OF STEAM.—This is a new and pretty conception of the often-told story. It was when James Watt (1736-1819), inventor of the steam engine, was a mere boy, that he caught the idea of making steam work for man. His older sister says she saw him by the fireside in their country home, watching the bubbling kettle with its dancing lid, and marveling at its vigorous force.
