The diffi-culty of reaching the quartz mines with adequatemachinery has delayed the development of those re-sources. The country is well adapted to grazing,and vast herds of cattle and flocks of sheep roamover the plains and valleys of the territory. It liesbetween the 42° and the 40° of latitudes, lyingmainly in the basin of the Upper Columbia climate is delightful, and eventually Idaho willbe a prosperous ILLINOIS. The first white settlement in Illinois dates back tothe seventeenth century. The first settlement indistinction from Jesuit missions, was made by theFrench at Kaskaskia in 1700. But in the presentdevelopment of Illinois the French can hardly besaid to have taken an appreciable part. It requiresthe skill and patience of the antiquary to discovereven the faintest trace of the first settlers. The ter-ritory of Illinois was organized in 1809, when a ter-ritory of that name was cut off from Indiana. Thesouthern part of the state was settled first, the courseof pioneer enterprise being along rivers, especiallydown the Ohio and up the Mississippi. Then, too,the Indians of the north were particularly trouble-some. A military post was early established at themouth of the Chicago River on the site of the pres-ent city of that name. It was called Fort 1812 the fort was taken by the Indians and thewhites cruelly massacred. This massacre led
