Gates of \\Tought iron, with per-haps a martlet from the Byrd coat of armsabove them, swung between tall pillars in thewall. From this entrance, a pathway ap-proached the homestead diagonally, and af-forded charming views of the house and itssurroundings. To our right as we walked,the lawn, thick set with trees, sloped gentlyto the river wall. To our left, the views camein broken, picturesque bits; a stretch ofshrubbery, a reach of garden wall, somequaint outbuildings in warm, dull red, aglimpse of courtyard beyond a corner of box,and then the old home itself. THE HOME OF A COLONIAL BELLE Above squared stone steps, the double doorswith the fanlight above them are framed bytwo engaged columns supporting an elaboratepediment that has the symbolic pineapple inthe centre. We stood before the fine entrance, fancypainting the old-time scene within; that sceneof eighteenth century elegance which is thetraditional picture of colonial Westover. Thedoor opened, and we entered upon perhapsquite as charming an eighteenth centuryscene, which is the Westover of to-day.
