The school-girl at herdesk, the seamstress at the machine—every womanleaning forward, whether wearing a loose or tight GYNECOLOGY. 85 corset, presses the abdominal contents downwardand inward. Dr. Kellogg has made very important observa-tions, by means of an air-pessary connected with atambour, showing the influence of the corset uponthe movements of the pelvic organs. These observa-tions and experiments show that there is a normalmovement of the pelvic viscera corresponding tothose of respiration, and that these movements arelessened by constriction of the waist. The move-ments of the pelvic organs depend upon the actionof the diaphragm. This muscle not being ableto descend to the usual degree, there is less move-ment of the pelvic viscera. Fig. 34 exhibits the movements of the pelvic Fig. Ordinary. Forced. Fig. 35 shows the movements of the pelvic organsresulting from ordinary, and forced respiration, pa-tient horizontal, as before, but wearing a corsetmoderately tight. The difference between the twotracings is noticeable in that the movement of the Fig. 35. Ordinary. Forced. Vaginal Tracing, with Corset. pelvic organs is less when the corset is tight thanwhen it is loose. The reason for this is made ap-parent by the tracing shown in Fig. 36, the first Fig. 36.
