The first of the new wave Rioja companies to be founded on the fall of General Franco. Its founder was Enrique Forner, whose father had left Spain during the civil war and established a wine business in Bordeaux owning two major properties in the Médoc. Sr. Forner determined to create a new style of Rioja, with less ageing in cask and more in the bottle. The white wines were produced with fermentation at low tempersture, which gave crisper, cleaner, flavours. They were an immediate success in Britain and nowhere moreso than in Wales. Enrique Forner died recently and the company is now run by his daughter Cristina. Their modern cellars in Cenicero, at the heart of the Rioja Alta,
