Having lost hismother in 1830, the father with his son removed to NewYork State five years later, and in 1837 the family re-paired to Michigan and located upon his present residencein Chester township. There were then no highways, and travel was very difiicult, even with the stout ox-teams thenin general use. Perseverance and courage were in thoseprimitive days necessary qualities to the pioneer, and theseMr. Beekman possessed in an eminent degree. He was in1840 married to Miss Mary V. Minor, of
