Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) in fall colors – Bavaria, Fussen, Germany.


Construction on Neuschwanstein Castle began on September 5th, 1869. on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Fussen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, popularly known as 'mad King Ludwig'. It was built in honor of Richard Wagner and was designed to be a hideaway for the reclusive king, as well as a palace evoking Medieval myth and fantasy. Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty's Castle and Cinderella’s castle were inspired by King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle.
