Chicago, Illinois, USA on December 20th, 2013. Empty shelves with 75% off on all food, gift, and pharmacy items at all Dominick’s grocery stores in the Chicago area. Dominick’s is owned by Safeway Inc. , and prepares to close all stores by the end of the 2013 because of poor sales. Most stores will be bought by Jewel or Mariano’s and a few more major Chicago stores soon to be decided. Over 6,100 members of the Chicago staff will lose their jobs right before Christmas. All employees had re-apply at a series of job fairs in early December for the new positions at the newly owned stores. Each store will hire about 250 new employees. Dominick's was started in 1925 as a small corner store on Chicago's west side and has been an institution in the city.
