Hip ligaments. Computer artwork of a posterior oblique view of the hip bones and ligaments (white). At upper right the lumbar spine ends in the sacrum and coccyx (tailbone). Either side are the large ear-shaped fused hip bones of the pelvis. These articulate with the head of the femurs (thigh bones) to form the hip joints, with the pelvic girdle at lower centre. Here, the hip joints are mostly obscured by bands of strong fibrous tissue called ligaments, joining the femur and the pelvis bones. At left, the ischiofemoral ligament is shown, with the other femoral ligaments removed.
