Active galaxy NGC 1365. Optical image of the active barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 in the constellation Fornax. This is a Seyfert galaxy, a galaxy with a highly-energetic nucleus. Its nucleus contains a powerful emitter of X-rays. This galaxy is a member of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies, a group which lies around 70 million light years away. NGC 1365 is one of the nearest of the Seyfert galaxies, most of which are extremely distant. This image was produced using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
