Gathering firewood. 16-year-old mother gathering firewood to fuel the open fire she is using to cook food for her and her baby. Open wood fires create a lot of smoke (upper left), and this can lead to diseases caused by smoke inhalation. Use of devices such as ceramic stoves and smoke hoods can reduce such diseases. Photographed in January 2006 in Korando village, near Kisumu, Kenya. For a house with a chimney, see image P980/093. For the inside of this house, see images P980/092 and M935/292.
