Digitised-colour angiogram of a lateral (profile) view of the left carotid artery of the head. The carotid is the major artery supplying blood to the head. Here, near the base of the skull the common carotid artery (red) divides into internal and external branches (not clearly distinguishable). The internal branch of this artery supplies blood to the brain, forehead, nose, eye and middle ear. The external carotid supplies blood to the more superficial areas of the face, scalp and neck. Angiography is an X-ray investigation of the arteries using a radio-opaque contrast medium to define the outline of these blood vessels.
