Wliatever his former behaviour, on which the cardinals groundedtheir objections, may have been, is uncertain ; but it is scarce to beimagined, that a King of Edwards judgment and constant inclinationto promote merit, would have raised him to such a dignity, had hebeen so undeserving; nor would he have employed him in so manyaffairs of consequence, as he appears to have done, had he not beencapable of executing them. In the year 1346, David King of Scotland, at the head of 50,000men, invaded England, and after plundering and destroying thecountry wherever he came, encamped his army in Bear-park nearStanhope in the county of Durham, from which he detached parties to. 441 to ravage the neighbouring country. To repel these invaders, a greatnumber of the northern noblemen armed all their vassals, and cameto join the King, who was then at Durham ; from thence theymarched against the Scots in four separate bodies, the first of whichwas commanded b}^ Lord Percy and Bisho]> Hatfield, who on thisoccasion assumed tlie warrior, as well as several other prelates. Aftera severe battle, the Scots were routed with the loss of about 15,000men, and their King taken prisoner. The victory being over, theEnglish returned to Durham, and after a solenm mass, otiered thebanners there taken at the shrine of Saint Cuthbert.
