A late 19th Century illustration of the Po River as it runs through Turin in Piedmont, Italy. Like the rest of Piedmont, the city was annexed by the French Empire in 1802 and became the seat of the prefecture of Pô department until the fall of Napoleon in 1814. In 1861, Turin became the capital of the newly proclaimed united Kingdom of Italy until 1865, when the capital was moved to Florence, and then to Rome after the 1870 conquest of the Papal States.
