The simplest brace for the treatment of knockkneeconsists of a strip of flat iron placed along the outerside of the limb, reaching from the greater trochanter tothe sole, forged round at the bottom, bent at a right 269 angle, and passed into a hole or a tube in the heel ofthe shoe ; attached to this at the ankle is a padded ironband extending about two-thirds around the limb ; atthe upper part of the thigh is a like band, and thesebands are joined by a strip of iron placed directly backof the middle line of the limb. At the top of the sidebar is a pad from two to three inches in diameter. Thelimb is first bandaged to the posterior bar, securing theknee in full extension, and then to both bars, stretch-. This corrected position is constantly maintaineduntil the deformity is not only corrected but readilyremains so; then the jointed retention-braces may beapplied and joint action permitted. Plaster-of-paris may be used in the treatment of knock-knee after the same manner as suggested in bowlegs, but it is less efficient. If it is used the limb must befirmly held by two persons while the plaster is setting, I 270 or a strip of splinting may be bandaged on at the sideand another at the back of the limb. The operative treatment of bowlegs and knockknees con-sists in an osteoclasis or an osteotomy of the bones atthe points of election. Osteoclasis is the making of asimple fracture, either by hand or by the aid of aspecially devised instrument termed an is the making of a compound fracture bythe use of cutting instruments for dividing the bone
