Philippa Garrett Fawcett (1868-1948), English mathematician. Fawcett had the highest marks of any candidate in the Cambridge University mathematical tripos in 1890, her position was described as \above the Senior Wrangler\". Women, however, were not admitted to full membership of the University or awarded degrees until 1947. She was the daughter of Millicent Garrett, the first woman to graduate medicine from St. Andrews. Fawcett went to South Africa in 1901 to report on the concentration camps of the Boer War, and returned in 1902 to teach in Johannesburg. In 1905 she returned to England to take the post of assistant to the Director of Education in London."
