Textile, Medium: silk, metallic threads Technique: fancy satin damask with supplementary weft, Long vertical length of red damask has symmetrical broad scrolling bands with acanthus foliage curling about them. Palmette between bands is at top. In center is a single large figure of Pope Gregory the Great (ca. 540–604), wearing the papal tiara, his right hand raised in benediction, and holding a crozier of a double cross in his left hand. A dove, an attribute of Gregory, hovers close to his right ear. The figure of the Pope is brocaded in white silk, and silver and gold metallic threads.
