Maria Mitchell (1818-1889), American astronomer who discovered Comet 1847 VI. She was professor of astronomy at Vassar College, the first woman elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the first as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
