There is an example of an 11th Century Broadsword (Norman style one-handed sword) which would have been typical of knights and men-at-arms in the First and Second Crusades. This sword is a simple design with a “cruciform” cross guard and slight variations on that design were very common among nobility of England, France, Germany, Italy, etc. and used for many centuries. There is a 2-handed European sword, which most closely resembled a Germanic two-hander. These were heavy swords with a long cross guard which were very effective as battlefield swords, fighting versus Pikemen, and for use defending a castle wall or other narrow passageway.
