Having now resolved to devote himself exclusively to the artist life, he wasappointed, in 1833, to the directorship of the concerts and theatre of Dussel-dorf, where, in 1835, he produced his great oratorio of Paulus ; and tenyears afterward he accepted of the same office at Leipsic, whither young menof talent flocked from all parts of Europe, as well to seek the acquaintance ofthe leading professor of the day, as to submit their own productions to hiskidyinent. He afterward accepted the musical directorship at Berlin, at the 592 FELIX MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY. earnest entreaty of the king of Prussia, but resigned it in a short time, andreturned to his favorite Leipsic, where he resided till his death, acting as con-ductor of the concerts, and along with his friend Moscheles, director of theconservatory of music. During these labors he repeatedly visited England,to conduct great musical festivals and concerts. In 1847, his health began to fail, his strength being exhausted byfatigue and excitement ; and the sudden death of a favorite sister at this periodinflicted upon his nervous system a blow, from which it never fully trying to recruit his health and spirits amid the scenery of the Alps, hereturned to his home apparently in better health ; but it again gave way, an
