Stanley meets Livingstone. Historical artwork of the legendary meeting between Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) and David Livingstone (1813-1873) in Africa in 1871. The Anglo-American journalist and explorer Stanley (at left) went to Africa to find the Scottish missionary and explorer Livingstone. He arranged a large expedition to Ujiji, a town on Lake Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania) where tales told of a white man. On 10 November 1871, Stanley unfurled the American flag and marched into Ujiji, firing guns in a show of strength. At the meeting, unsure of how to greet him, he raised his hat and said 'Dr Livingstone I presume?'. Stanley returned home. Livingstone stayed and died in Africa.
