This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Planck space observatory sensors, artwork. This unmanned spacecraft, launched on 14 May 2009, is designed to study the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the radiation left over from the Big Bang. The Planck instruments, the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) and the High Frequency Instrument (HFI), operate at a few degrees above absolute zero using a several-stage cooling process that uses liquid hydrogen and liquid helium isotopes. Microwave radiation collected by the telescope heats bolometric detectors which convert the temperature rise to an electrical signal. This artwork shows the interior of the instrumentation.
