He kept up his law studies all the while, andwas admitted to the Kennebec count)^ bar in April, 1836. He then retnrned toBridgton, his native town, and began the practice of his profession. In 1841 he wasappointed county attorney for Cumberland county, and in 1847 removed to Portlandto take charge of the Portland Advertiser. In 1849 he was chosen representative.
