On the contrary, they can see in theheart of that intense light, which you can notlook upon for a moment, the very condition ofthe iron, and tell to an instant when it is readyto be drawn. When this is the case, and every thing is inreadiness, the helper raises a sliding door, orapron, in the front of the furnace, and the pud-dlcr seizes a ball with a pair of heavy tongs androlls it out upon the iron floor, where it is caughtup by a third individual upon a small iron truckcalled a ball-trolly, and run oflf rapidly to thesqueezer. As he starts with it a ladleful ofwater is thrown upon it, which, decomposingunder the intense heat into its component gases, inflames, and burning with a brilliant whiteblaze that lights up the figure of the truck-manwith a sepulchral glare, giving him a fiend-like. THE PUDDLING BAXL-TKAIN. AMONG THE NAIL-MAKERS. IGl api)carance, Avliich is considerably heightened bythe stream of sparks the dripping mass leaves inits wake. The squeezer, toward which he is hurryinghis steps, is an iron-toothed and corrugatedwheel, running horizontally within a case whichsurrounds it, leaving a space between, in whichthe molten mass is squeezed, rolled, and com-pressed, by which means much of the cinder isforced out. After passing the circuit of thewheel, the ball, which has now assumed theshape of a culie, falls out upon the floor, Avhereit is seized by a new operative with a pair oftongs and dragged off to the puddling ball-train. The effect of the squeezing operation is con-siderably heightened by frequent explosions asloud as those of a musket, which arc caused bythe water that is allowed to run over the wheelto prevent its heating. This water gets into thecrevices of the iron, where it is suddenly con-verted into steam and tears its way out, scatter-ing sparks
