Foetus. Coloured 3-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a healthy human foetus approaching full term. The foetus is facing towards the mother's back (left). The umbilical cord, which links the foetus with the placenta on the uterus wall, is seen at centre. The foetus' brain, spinal column, heart, liver and lungs are also visible. This image is a composite of several sagittal (side) sections through the foetus. MRI scanning uses powerful magnetic fields and pulses of radio waves to produce images of soft body tissues.
