Four historic railway viaducts cross Manchester's Castlefield Canal Basin. The 1894 tubular steel Great Northern Viaduct (left of shot) and the 1877 wrought iron truss girder Cornbrook Viaduct (right of shot) are the middle two of the group. The Great Northern Viaduct is disused. The Cornbrook Viaduct, deemed to be in better condition than the Great Northern, was chosen for refurbishment in 1990-91 and is currently used by Metrolink trams going to Altrincham. The 1849 Manchester South Junction Viaduct, the most southerly viaduct in the group, rises far right. The 47 storey Beetham Tower, completed in 2006, rises in the background. At 168 m (551 ft) it is currently the tallest building in Manchester, the eleventh tallest in the UK and the tallest outside London.
