Ground moraine, in front a hillside with autumnal lenga beech forest, south side of Brazo Rico, Perito Moreno Glacier, Andes
Lenga or Southern Beech Trees (Nothofagus pumilio) are deciduous and native to the Southern Andes at latitude 36-56 degrees. They grow up to 30m (100ft) and have a trunk diameter of (5 ft). The dark green leaves, 2-4 cm long, turn reddish brown in autumn, which is March-April in the Southern Hemisphere. Lenga Forest is well seen on the lower hillsides around the Perito Moreno Glacier, in Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park, some 50 km east of the tourist town of El Calafate. Perito Moreno Glacier ice treks, using crampons, start on the south side of Brazo Rico and involve a walk through lenga forest, where this photograph was taken. Safari boats, travelling across Brazo Rico, from Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, transfer visitors to the far shoreline, where, using crampons, they undertake guided tour 'mini-ice treks' or 5 hour 'big ice treks' on the surface of the glacier. Morainic material covers the south shore of Brazo Rico.
