The first step to take inlaying out the rafter is tolocate the point D on the uncutpiece as shown in Fig. 193. The point is chosen so that it is far enough from the end to formthe eaves FD, and the distance T D is usually taken 2 incheson a 2 X 4 inch and 3 inches or more on larger size rafters. It iswell to remember that the measurement is to be taken from the topin order that the roof surface may always be even and smooththroughout. Now the edge of the blade of the square must coin-cide with D, but the position which the square will take dependsentirely on the pitch. In all cases 12 inches is used on the blade of the square and thefigures on the tongue depend on the rise per foot of run. If the riseof the rafter is 12 inches to the foot, 12 inches should be used on thetongue also. If the rise is 10 inches, use 10 inches on the tongue. In. Fig. 192. Diagram Showing Bevel Used onCommon Rafters 145 134 CARPENTRY the cut the rise is 8 inches to the foot, the run is 12 feet, the rise is8 feet, and 12 and 8 are the figures used.
