Istanbul, historically called Byzantium and later Constantinople, is Turkey's most populous city, and its cultural and financial capital. Hagia Sophia was the greatest Christian cathedral of the Middle Ages, later converted into an imperial mosque by the Ottoman Empire, and later into a museum, in the centre of the city. It is considered one of the greatest and most beautiful buildings in history.
