Bengal Fig, Indian Fig, East Indian Fig, Banyan or Indian Banyan, Ficus benghalensis, Moraceae. Durban Botanical Gardens.

Bengal Fig, Indian Fig, East Indian Fig, Banyan or Indian Banyan, Ficus benghalensis, Moraceae. Durban Botanical Gardens, South Africa. Endemic to Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Ficus benghalensis produces propagating roots which grow downwards as slender vines. Once these roots reach the ground, they take root and grow into woody trunks that can become indistinguishable from the main trunk. The tree thus expands and can cover enormous areas.
