On December 13 2016, Poland marked the 35th anniversary of the imposition of Martial Law which effectively crushed the independent social and trade union movement known as NSZZ Solidarnosc. In Warsaw, Poland, tens of thousands of people took part in a march organized by the Committee for the Defense of Democracy (KOD), in opposition to the ruling party, the Law and Justice Party (PiS). Martial Law was imposed by the Military Council for National Salvation (WRON) lead by, then, Prime Minister General Wojciech Jaruzelski. Martial Law was lifted on July 22, 1983. ©
