USAG-PTA's Cultural Resources team conducts archaeological surveys of sites on the Island of Hawaii. They wear helmets, flak vests and other personal protective equipment to guard against several risks: sharp lava rocks and rough terrain, as well as rare possibility of encountering unexploded ordnance (UXO). The second largest training area of its kind in the Pacific Command, Pohakuloa Training Area spans 133,000 acres and provides a complete training environment that incorporates all of the rigors of an actual deployment to an austere theater of operations.
