An economizerof 320 pipes. 4 in. by 10 ft., is placed between the boiler and , which is ft. in diameter and only 32 ft. long. A Wefugowater treating plant which has a capacity of 60,000 lb. of waterper hour. One 900-h. p. feed water heater used for the Draft is furnished by two slow speed fans. The feed water for this plant is pumped from the SanduskyRiver, which is turbid at all seasons of the year and the watercontains enough soluble impurities to make it expensive for usein steam boilers. analysis of this water made in February, 1901,. INTERIOR OF REPAIR SHOPS. showed it contained the following impurities, given in grains per U. S. gallon: Silica Oxide of iron Carbonate of lime Sulphate of lime Sulphate of magnesia Chloride of soda Total It was decided to put up a purifying plant to remove as far aspossible the soluble and suspended impurities from the water be-fore it entered the boilers, and a chemical precipitating methodwas chosen because it is possible by this means to reduce theamount of soluble lime salts to fractions of a grain per gallon, ata very reasonable cost. The apparatus adopted is the intermittentwater softening plant designed and erected by the Wefugo Co., ofCincinnati. The plant has a capacitysufficient to purify 42,000 lbsof water per hour, and consists of two precipitating tanks, each 19ft. inside diameter by 19 ft. 6 in. inside depth: these tanks areequipped with necessary apparatus to agitate the water, and withinlet and wash pipes
