Saint Gennaro mural Naples Italy
THE CITY OF NAPOLI IN Southern Italy is very devoted to its patron saint San Gennaro (Saint Januarius). Throughout the city, many small altars dedicated to the saint can be found; however, by far the biggest tribute to San Gennaro is this mural painted by Neapolitan street artist Jorit Agoch in 2015. The mural is located in a very crowded section of Forcella, strategically placed to improve tourism and the reputation of the city’s center. In this mural, San Gennaro is depicted as a young factory worker, drawing on the features of a friend of Agoch. The art style is an homage to Renaissance painter Caravaggio, who would also draw inspiration from famous figures and depict them as contemporary people. Jorit's depiction of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, draws on features of a 35-year-old friend who is a factory worker.
