Sacra di San Michele abbey and Rocciamelone mountain Piedmont Italy


Sacra di San Michele is built on the Pirchiriano mountain and dominates Chiusa di San Michele (Gorge of San Michele) in Valle di Susa, some 30 km west of Turin. It is the official landmark of the Piedmont region and it is a very important monument from the historical and architectural point of view. Many conquerors have passed through the Chiusa di San Michele, including Hannibal and Charlemagne. Monks have inhabited this strategically important location since the Xth century.
