Robert Peel, British statesman, 19th century. Peel (1788-1850) was Prime Minister from 1834-1835 and 1841-1846. He is probably best remembered for his organisation of a metropolitan police force for London, the officers of which became known as 'Peelers' or 'Bobbies'.
