And it is a melancholy fact that the Peoria newspaper which grew fromthe primordial germ, as it were, that first received press dispatches and was thefirst in Peoria to adopt the linotype and rise above the deficiencies and restric-tions of hand composition, should have so far lost its identity as to be remem-bered only at the further end of a hyphen in the appellation: its day and for more than a quarter of a century it was the leading newspaperin Peoria and the stalwart organ of the republican party in the interests ofwhich it was founded.
