Light micrograph of a fetal ovary showing several oocytes (immature egg cells) undergoing meiosis (gamete formation). The oocytes are in the pachytene stage of prophase I. In this stage the paired homologous chromosomes form a tetrad known as a bivalent. This is the stage when homologous recombination (crossing over) occurs. The paired chromosomes appear as thick.
