His father was a missionary inIndia for over thirty years and founder of theMissionary Review. The Wilders are of Englishdescent, through Thomas and Martha Wilder ofReading, England, who were Puritans. Three years later hewas awarded the degree of Master of Arts by thesame College. In October 1879, he entered Co-lumbia Law School, spent 1880-1881 in office andin teaching and tutoring, and was graduated wdthdegree of Bachelor of Laws in 1882, being admittedto the Bar by the General Term of the SupremeCourt of New York in the same year.
