A Tibetan woman wears a chain with a cross in Bingzhonglou, a tourist park on the Salween River in northern Yunnan. Established by a French missionary in the late 19th century, the church, Yesume Jiaotang or Church of Jesus, was given 50,000 RMB (approximately $6000) as a renovation grant from the government - some locals believe compensation for damaging the building during the Cultural Revolution. The majority of worshippers at the church are Tibetan like Ding (pictured); Catholicism is in the midst of a renaissance in Yunnan, according to Ding, its numbers increasing significantly in recent years.
