Afterundergoing many vicissitudes, this institution was placed on a stablefoundation in 1869, when it received from the State of Tennessee amagnificent donation. The fund thus donated was derived from theAct of Congress, July 2, 1862, distributing to each of the several States30,000 acres of the public domain for each Senator and Representativein Congress, the proceeds to be applied to establishing one or moreagricultural colleges. In 1869 Tennessee received land scrip to theamount of 300,000 acres as her ratable share. The scrip was sold, andreached the sum of $396,000. This entire sum was invested in Statebonds, at par. bearing 6 per cent interest, and was donated by the State See ante, paragraphs 194, 195. 290 History op Rev. T. W. Humes. to East Tennessee University, upon certain conditions for establish-ing an agricultural college. Rev. Thomas W. Humes, at that time President, organized the University on abasis to correspond with its increasedresources. In 1887 Congress made anannual appropriation to establish agricul-tural experiment stations. Tennesseesshare wis $15,000 per annuyn. In 1890the Morrill Act was passed by Congress,under which Tennessees share, beginningwith $15,000 per annum, increases $1,000each year until it reaches $25,000. TheState bestowed both these funds on theUniversity of Tennessee. The Universitynow has an endowment fund of $426,000,and owns property valued at $780,000. Ithas an annual income of abovit $70,000.
