Strimming olives from the trees is gentler than shaking them: the method chosen by large commercial producers.

There are two ways to harvest olives commercially. Historically, the fruit was allowed to drop to the ground and was then gathered by hand. Today, commercial growers use machines that shake the trees but this can bruise both the trees and the fruit. The preferred method is to surround the base of the tree with a net and using a kind of long rotary strimmer gently knock the olives to the ground.
