Oberhausen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Renaturalization of the Emscher in the Holtener Bruch. The currently straightened Emscher river regains curves and can meander through its new floodplain. The ecological reconstruction of the Emscher system consists of the construction of a central sewage system in the Ruhr area, the construction of sewage canals and the renaturation of the Emscher and its tributaries. The Emscher has been completely free of wastewater since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river was previously an open, surface mixed sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
