The winter of 2010-2011 included the UK's coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The UK's mean December 2010 temperature was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature reached minus ten degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 experienced two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The first cold spell lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The UK was under the influence of a prolonged north-easterly airstream drawing bitterly cold air from Northern Europe and Siberia. The beach in and around St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, displayed large areas of sea ice, several centimetres thick.
