After tsunami. Image 2 of 2. Satellite image of part of the northern shore of the coastal city of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, on 28 December 2004. The immense destruction was caused by huge waves (tsunamis) from a massive earthquake, the world's largest for 40 years, that struck on 26 December. It occurred underwater, 250 kilometres from Banda Aceh. Buildings were completely destroyed, fields (lower right) were flooded, and the coastline severely eroded (upper left). Tens of thousands died in this city; many more died elsewhere. The full death toll may never be known. Quickbird satellite image. Pre-tsunami image is E275/030.
